How AI is Transforming and Challenging Career Management
On my morning commute to Porto Business School, I listened to McKinsey's podcast reviewing 2024. According to the hosts, this year has once again been defined by the profound impact of generative artificial intelligence on our lives—past, present, and future.
As the new Director of Careers at Porto Business School, I reflected on the tremendous potential of this revolution, as well as the challenges it hides if its use is not balanced with a humanized approach. Without careful calibration, AI could become a trap for our students rather than an advantage.
Let me explain my thoughts. AI now allows us to break language barriers, automate and enhance CV writing and application processes, and efficiently segment and contact companies and job opportunities with unmatched speed and quality. This is a remarkable advantage that should be embraced and leveraged.
However, recruitment teams are increasingly voicing concerns about applications that look alarmingly similar, lacking differentiation. Upon verification, many of these applications are found to originate from AI tools. The result? Recruitment processes flooded with applications that fail to showcase the individuality of each candidate.
My recommendation is this: in managing our careers and responding to job opportunities, it will become critical to demonstrate that we are not only adept at using AI tools but also capable of advocating for their use within our teams. Equally important is balancing this with the personalization and context that only a human touch can bring. This combination could be the decisive factor in standing out and being selected!
